Some teams and their whanau, with waka in tow, arrived on Friday evening and accommodation was provided on a koha basis at the Kokiri Centre. Other teams and their whanau stayed in local backpackers and motels in Raglan. Most teams arrived early Saturday morning.

Registrations showed that the number of novice teams had increased from eighteen in 2008, to twenty-nine teams in 2009. Entries for the Stand-Up Paddle race were also good given this was the first time the race had been added to the event, and race organisers received many positive comments from competitors. The Stand-Up race was won by Bernd Sommer from Okere Falls in Rotorua who was also a former European White Water Kayak Champion. Local surfing champion Daniel Kereopa (Ngati Mahanga, Tainui, Ngati Tahinga) came in a close second.

In the 25km W6 (team of 6 paddlers) we had entries from well-known elite paddling teams like Team Goodyear, Herberts on Tour, Team Pheonix, Taniwha Grizzlies, Mitimitaga Mermaids, Manawa Kaha, and a ‘throw together’ women’s team captained by Nyree King (Tainui) and made up of many top W1 (individual) woman paddlers.

An outstanding team performance came from Wolfpak, all under-18 year old men from Auckland. Wolfpak are a newly formed team and they will be competing in the World Sprints in Noumea in May 2010. The youngest member of the team, Leyden Haronga (Ngati Porou) is only 16 years old and was a last-minute fill-in for National Junior Sprint Champion Hemi Wahapango. Leyden needed a waiver to be signed by his father in order for him to be able to compete in the division! Having the mix of experienced and less-experienced paddlers provided everyone with challenges, as well as opportunities for paddlers of all ages and levels of fitness to enjoy each others’ company and learn from each other.

Despite torrential rain and high winds in the days leading up to the race, the weather on race day was sunny and although the wind picked up over the morning, the race conditions were pretty good for May. The day began with karakia at 8 a.m. followed by race briefings for paddlers, safety briefings for the escort boats, and the first races were on the water by 9 a.m. Highlights from the day’s races included the novice and junior teams who paddled with a full tide and the very close finishes made the timekeepers’ jobs very exciting! The Women’s 25 kilometre race was also a ‘nail biter’ as Manawa Kaha Masters Womens team held the lead until the last turn buoy where they were passed by Team Paddle Up, captained by Nyree King. Tyrin Thomas (Te Arawa, Ngai Tamanuhiri) took first place in the Open Men W1 division. The Mens 25 kilometre race was paddled on a strong outgoing tide which made the first turn buoy (situated at the harbour mouth) very interesting! Team Goodyear (Tyrin Thomas paddled this race as well!) led from start to finish, and held off a late charge from Team Pineula. The men’s race got to be a ‘paddle-run-paddle’ race as the fast-falling tide meant that they encountered sandbanks on the upper reaches of the harbour!

Prize-giving Ceremony – Kokiri Centre

After the meal, participants packed out the Kokiri Stage building where prizes were awarded by Tyrin Thomas (four times National Sprint Champion and two time National Long Distance Champion), and local Raglan resident Dave Currie. Dave Currie is the Olympic and Commonwealth Games ‘Chef de Mission’, current Manager of the Black Caps, former marathon runner and Paralympics Marathon Running Guide, and competitor in the Whaingaroa Hoe 2008 7km W6 novice race.

The master of ceremonies for the evening was John Herbert who provided an informative and very enjoyable commentary on the races, the teams and the paddlers who received awards. Trophies carved by Kawharu Greensill, mokopuna of Eva Rickard, were presented to the Open Mens W6 and the Open Women W1. Prizes were presented to winners and second and third place-holders in the other race divisions.

Team Paddle Up from Nga Hoe Horo Club was awarded the Chrissy Herbert Memorial Trophy, a beautifully carved full length traditional hoe, as the first women’s team to cross the line.

Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka and Nga Tai Whakarongo, would like to thank Te Puni Kokiri for assistance to meet our venue and some of our food and crockery and cutlery hireage costs for the Whaingaroa Hoe 2009.
